One Lung, One Life, One Hundred Miles!

Dave Staley, a resident of Greater Manchester, was diagnosed with the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma in October 2015.

Following an operation to remove his left long, and a course of chemotherapy, Dave is now taking on a tough 100 mile bike ride to raise funds for medical treatment and research.

As Dave said: “I wanted a challenge, I want to inspire others that no matter what your health is, with the correct training, support & belief, anything is possible”.

Dave will be attempting the ride on 30th July 2017. Any money raised will go to Mesothelioma UK and the British Lung Foundation. Good luck Dave!!

Action Mesothelioma Day Friday 7th July 2017

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer caused by asbestos.  Every year on Action Mesothelioma Day, groups like ours raise money for mesothelioma research, and meet to campaign for justice for asbestos victims and their families.

This year Action Mesothelioma Day will be on Friday 7th July.

We will be meeting at Sackville Gardens in Manchester at 12.30pm to release doves in memory of those of have died from mesothelioma. This will be followed by a public meeting at the Mechanics Institute (103 Princess Street, Manchester, M1 6DD) at 1pm. The meeting will be addressed by Sir Anthony Newman-Taylor of the National Mesothelioma Research Centre.

Any money we raise for Action Mesothelioma Day this year will be going to the June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund. To donate, please click here.

Living Well With Mesothelioma support group- next meeting

The next meeting of our support group, for people with mesothelioma and their carers, will be from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Monday 6th February 2017.

The venue has changed since the last meeting. The new venue is the Methodist Central Hall on Oldham Street.

At our February meeting, we are very pleased to announce that our speaker will be Sir Anthony Newman-Taylor of the new National Mesothelioma Centre.

Anthony will be speaking about how the work of the Centre will contribute to the fight to find a cure, and better treatments, for mesothelioma.

We hope you are able to come along!

Asbestos Victims Groups welcome £5 million pledged for a National Mesothelioma Centre but argue for full consultation and open tenders before funds allocated.

Funding for mesothelioma research has always been pitifully low and for years now  we have campaigned hard for better funding. Our groups have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for research through sponsorship of our Action Mesothelioma Day events and other fundraising activities.

So we are delighted that £5 million has been pledged by the Chancellor with the express aim of establishing a National Mesothelioma Centre to give a lead on developing research to find better treatment and a cure for this dreadful disease. This is a significant sum, at least compared to funding previously given for mesothelioma research.
