Gordon Marriott Memorial Golf Day 2018

This year’s Gordon Marriott Memorial Golf Day took place at Blackley Golf Club, Middleton on Friday 7 September.

The day has been held annually since 2011 in memory of the late Gordon Marriott who passed away from mesothelioma in 2010.

His daughter and son-in-law, Natalie and Chris Hazelhurst, set up the annual golf day to raise awareness of mesothelioma and raise money for the Greater Manchester Asbestos Victims Support Group (GMAVSG).

A full day of fundraising activities began on the course at 8.00 am, with competition prizes ranging from a Golf Stand Bag and full set of Irons to Golf Polo shirts, and from a Mercedes* (for a ‘hole in one’ at hole 7!) to the traditional ‘Wooden Spoon’ trophy!

Jeff and Rob attended the lively and entertaining evening presentation. They were accompanied by Vera Rigby, Val Grieve, Ann Byrnes and Sandra Lucas from the support group and also by Lorraine Creech from Mesothelioma UK.

As a Mesothelioma UK Clinical Nurse Specialist Team Leader, Lorraine was the evening’s guest speaker and spoke movingly about mesothelioma, the work of Mesothelioma UK and about GMAVSG.

Jeff went up to receive a cheque for the amazing sum of £11,200 which had been raised on the day. He explained how the donation would help GMAVSG, as a charity, to continue to give free advice and support to people like Gordon, his wife Christine and their family, at a time when they are facing probably the most difficult crisis of their lives.

Jeff gave a massive thanks: – to Chris and Natalie for their tireless work in organising and promoting the event and for their continued support of our group; to Slater & Gordon lawyers who were this year’s Golf Day Charity Patron; to all those individuals, companies and organisations who had sponsored the event; to all those who had participated in the day’s fundraising activities; and to all those people ‘on the ground’ who worked so hard to make the event such a success.

*Sadly, no one won the Mercedes as a ‘hole in one’ at hole 7 eluded even the most  concentrated minds!
